I have no trace of 42-109806 IT'S "T.S." BOYS in 389th BG after 11 Sep 44 and think it is very likely that it was used by 466th BG out of Station AAF 120 (Attlebridge) on the gas haul from 13 thru 30 Sep 44 and declared war weary before or after those operations. It was superseded in 389th BG, 567th BS, as HP Y by 42-50731 TOONERVILLE TROLLEY before the Group's 5 Oct 44 mission.
http://www.b24bestweb.com/Pics-T-TONI-TOO.htm

A number of 8th AF B-24s were declared war weary in Sep 44 when replacements became plentiful. Also, several war weary B-24s were loaned to Groups participating in the truckin' and gas haul operations at that time.

42-109806 was salvaged at 3 SAD (Griston/Watton) between 26 & 31 May 45 as it was considered uneconomical to rework the left aileron and right wing panels 17 & 18. This is listed on the 3 SAD Field Engineering Salvage List of Aircraft assigned to 448th BG but 42-109806 has not been otherwise identified with that Group.

I have no pictures of THE DISSIPATED DUCK or HAPPY HANGOVER but can say that:
as pilot of the crew that flew 42-94994 THE DISSIPATED DUCK to England, Lt. (later Lt.Col) Jack L. Mercier would have picked up the aircraft at Topeka AAF, KS, flown it to Morrison AAF, West Palm Beach, FL, and have departed from there on 26 Mar 44 to fly to England by the southern route. After landing at the ATC Terminal, Valley, on the isle of Anglesey, Wales, the aircraft was ferried to be received by the 8th AF at BAD 2, Warton, on 12 Apr 44 where it was involved in a landing accident on arrival. It was repaired, given 8th AF modifications and assigned to 446th BG, 707th BS as JU T. It was MIA on 11 Jul 44.
Lt. Mercer and his crew arrived at Seething on 6 May 44 where they were assigned to 448th BG, 715th BS.
10 of their 14 missions from 13 May thru 21 Jun 44 were flown in 42-95075 IO S HAPPY HANGOVER

Info from Tom Brittan...

Quote:
As LIBBY RAIDER has struts to the D-1 pitot masts it cannot be D-160 CO 42-72820 which was in 5th BG and lost 22 Apr 44.

The only 868th BS J CO lost in Apr 44 was J-45 CO 42-73446, lost on 12 Apr 44 (MACR 5024) which is, I suggest, the S/N of LIBBY RAIDER.

By the way, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission Website, the crew in the photo appear to have been killed on 16 Feb 46 although 16 Apr 46 is the date shown for two of them.

 Re: mission records

44-40242 was an original with the 491st and was taken to England by the David E. Hicks crew. The co-pilot was F/O Steiner (NMI) Knutsen, whom I assume was your father. As for the name, Tom Brittan, an expert in this area, has written:

"Named THE PRIDE OF THE 48 with a picture of the outline of the United States having a pin up girl in the center. Next a circle was painted on containing a skull with a tuft of red hair and two six-shooters and seven aces of spades underneath and it was named THE HARD WAY. The picture was covered with blue paint. In...23 June 44 it is listed as having no name and its insignia is described as a plain blue circle, At that time it was nicknamed BLUE BALLS. It was finally named THE HOMING PIGEON. None of these names appears to have been painted on the nose."

The plane was transferred from the 854BS to the 852BS in early 1945. It survived the war and was returned to the States with 95 missions to its credit.

From Tom Brittan:

Quote:
The Frank T Gengler crew flew missions out of Old Buckenham from May 22 thru Jul 21, 44, date when their plane crashed after being involved in an MAC.

On Mar 11, 44 the Gengler crew bailed out of 42-78062 when it ran out of gas and crashed not far from its base while they were assigned to 382 BG, 536 BS, based at Muroc AAF, CA..

Sadly, I have no record of the B-24 that the Gengler crew flew to England, probably during April or early May 1944. ATC Operations Orders, if they could be found, would be the only way of discovering its identity.

Re: Eugene Sullivan, 453rd at Old Buck
« Result #7 on Nov 22, 2007, 1:59pm »

From Tom Brittan:

Quote:
5142 is the Shipment Number appearing in the Movement Orders for the Flight Echelon comosed of the original 453rd BG crews who flew their new B-24H aircraft from West Palm Beach to Old Buckenham in December 1943 and January 1944.

The suffix H is indicative of 733rd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), one of the four squadrons in 453rd BG, the other three having G, J and K suffixes.

However, I cannot trace Eugene Sullivan as a Radio Operator or in any other capacity in any of the 453rd BG original crews. The only Sullivans listed in Lloyd Prang's enhanced version of Andy Low's The Liberator Men of "Old Buck" are:

Lt. Col. Frank E. Sullivan, Group Operations Officer, later CO of 732nd BS.

Sgt. John J. Sullivan, Ball turret gunner with Lt. Louis Scherzer, an original pilot in 735th BS (interned in Switzerland on 25 Apr 44 after landing at Dübendorf).

Lt. Raymond E. Sullivan, Pilot of a replacement crew in 733rd BS (missions 27 Apr - 2 Aug 44).

S/Sgt. Ray Sullivan, Waist gunner with Lt. James J. Scanlon in 734th BS (missions 30 Aug 44 - 26 Feb 45).
